True Feelings
Written by: Phebe Fabacher
Romance with a long-term best friend is more complicated than it seems. Especially when it's one-sided. The realization of it all.

A poem included in Fabacher's "Becoming of the Ocean" book, now available in paperback.
His smile.
Lips formed perfectly into what I desire.
The way he pushes his hair back,
my mind runs wild.
A light blush forming across my face,
I stagger.
But soon I had realized,
it wasn't going to last forever.
He was far away.
Like he was across the ocean tide,
yet looking deep into my eyes.
I clenched my heart—
the remains descending
like the clash between the surface.
His smile shown elsewhere,
we became a past memory.
My face heated with pain,
I let water form aside my eyes.
I clenched my pillow,
looking out my bedroom window
at the starry night sky.
I wipe my tears,
and smile.
Tomorrow, I'll see you.
I'll always see you.
